Operation Christmas Child: Ascension will once again be collecting shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. For those of you not familiar with this program, Operation Christmas Child, through Samaritan’s Purse, collects shoe boxes that you fill with items for underprivileged children throughout the world. It also spreads the Gospel to these children, many of whom have never heard the story of Jesus before. Since 1993, over 100 million shoe boxes have been distributed in more than 150 countries. Ascension has collected over 250 boxes the last two years. Our goal this year is 140. WITH GOD’S HELP, WE CAN DO IT!

Directions on how to pack your shoe box:
Step 1: Select how many boxes you are going to fill – Use your own shoe box (“standard size”), plastic container, or boxes we get from Samaritan’s Purse. The boxes we get from Samaritan’s Purse can be obtained from the church. Children like to receive the plastic containers (with removable lid) because they use them to transport water to their house. They have to be about the same size as the OCC shoeboxes (11.5”L, 6” W, 4.25” H). If you use your own box or plastic container and wrap it, you have to wrap the lid separately (they inspect the boxes).
Step 2: Decide on a boy or a girl for each box and the age range – Attach a label to your box indicating your choice. Labels are provided in the information brochure or you can print your own from the Samaritan’s Purse website.
Step 3: Shop – You don’t have to spend a lot of money. Most items can be purchased at the Dollar Store. A list of recommended items as well as prohibited items can be found in the brochure or from the Samaritan’s Purse website.
Step 4: Pack your box
Step 5: Include $7 donation for each box if you wish.
- You only need to do one donation even if you’re doing multiple boxes
- Place the envelope with your donation in one of your shoeboxes on top of all the items. Make your check out to “Samaritan’s Purse.”
- Envelopes are in the brochure also.
- You can also donate online and print a barcode that you can attach to your box. You will get an email telling you to what country your box was sent.
Step 6: Include a letter to the child if you like. – If you put your name and address on it, the children may write back.
Step 7: Put one or two rubber bands around the box.
Step 8: Pray for the child or children that will be receiving your box(es). – Pray that they will receive Christ into their hearts after hearing the Gospel.
Step 9: Bring your box(es) to Ascension – Place them on the table in the Narthex or drop them off at the church office. You can start bringing in boxes November 8th. Last day to bring in boxes is Sunday, November 22nd at Noon.
